Many students would say they "can`t" get up in front of an audience. [The teaching artists] not only get them up, they teach them to move an audience to laughter and tears. This is the POWER of getting art into the hands, minds and hearts of the students. - a teacher on Lana`i
For the last several year, as part of UH Manoa Outreach College`s Statewide Cultural Extension Program (SCEP) three respected artist educators, musician Bailey Matsuda, storyteller Nyla Fujii-Babb, and dancer/choreographer Yukie Shiroma, have been working with students on Lana`i and Moloka`i to develop songs and stories from oral histories and the youth`s own contemporary experiences. The narratives span local history to romantic heartbreaks, and make a powerful case for preserving the rural lifestyle of these islands. The Honolulu concert of these young singer/songwriters and storytellers is a showcase of their dedicated efforts, new confidence, and a gift to all. Joining them on stage, their teachers and some special guests, artistic role models from Lana`i and Moloka`i.
I loved the way I touched the people and the way they touched me.
Storytelling brought out the spirit in me.

I like going fishing
Casting out the line
I like diving down
Morris Point get fish
I like going hunting
In the gulches on the west side
I like going swimming
At the wharf when hot
(Chorus)
We get the best beaches
Kaluakoi, Sandys, Dixies
We get the best people
Loving and nice,/i>
