This course is intended for home and condominium owners with a serious interest in making their outside landscape more useful and enjoyable. The course addresses the process of preparing a residential landscape master plan. Topics include design principles; landscape elements; plant materials including tropical, drought-resistant, and native plants; irrigation; lighting; installation; and maintenance. Useful tips on sustainable and other landscape practices are introduced throughout the workshop.

Andrew J. Kaufman, ASLA, assistant specialist, Tropical Plant and Soil Science, with the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR), teaches with professional members of the American Society of Landscape Architects Hawai‘i Chapter. Kaufman collaborated with University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa graduate student Leyla Cabugos, CTAHR specialist Linda J. Cox, and University of Hawai‘i Natural Resources and Environmental Management assistant professor Tomoaki Miura on the presentation, "Feasibility of Rooftop Landscaping with Native Hawaiian Plants in Urban Districts of Hawai‘i, " at the Fifth Annual International Greening Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference held in Minneapolis, Minnesota April 29 to May 1, 2007.
